The Albanian Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, who is visiting New York
as part of the Albanian delegation at the UN General Assembly, gave a
live interview for Top Channel and spoke about the progress of the
meetings that the Albanian officials had with their homologues.

TCH: Mr.Bushati, you have met your homologues in New York, while we value as very important the one with Mr.Venizellos. Greece and Albania have some open matters that are being discussed, while the problem of the Greek birthplaces of Albanian emigrants’ children on their Albanian passports has returned. Have you discussed for a solution, and do we have any strategy for removing the misunderstandings on other issues, such as that of the maritime border?

Bushati: I have had some meetings in New York, one of which was with Mr.Venizellos. There are two matters dating from the past decades, and on the other hand we are considering the creation of a strong strategic partnership. The Albanian side has all the good will for resolving these issues. I can say that the meeting has been held with a dosage of realization.

TCH: You have also met with the Serbian Foreign Ministers. What are the unsolved issues between Tirana and Belgrade?

Bushati: With the Serbian Foreign Minister we discussed about intensifying contacts, especially now there is a new situation between Serbia and Kosovo, after the agreement. We discussed for having a solid approach to Brussels. We have differences, but also understanding in many other issues.

TCH: In these days there have been words for the creation of a Western Balkan Union between Albania and the former Yugoslavian countries. Have you discussed about this matter in New York? If yes, what is the stance of the Albanian government on this matter?

Bushati: The Balkan Block has been discussed with the regional homologues. Tomorrow we will have another meeting, and it is normal that there will be regional initiatives. Albania will have a careful approach in this. We must first see the effect of the existing initiatives. For us it is important to have initiatives that include Balkan countries that are part of the European Union, such as Slovenia, Croatia, and other Eastern European countries, such as Romania and Bulgaria.

TCH: This weekend, Prime Minister Rama will hold a speech in front of the UN Assembly. What are the points in which it will be focused?

Bushati: The Prime Minister’s points are related to the new government’s vision on Foreign Policy, relations with neighbors and Albania’s role in the international arena.
