Alarm for cervix cancer

Cervix cancer cases are increasing quickly in our country, due to the lack of frequent medical tests of women.

There are more than 120 new cases each year, reported only from the public health system, and 50 of them resulting in death.

“The cervix cancer is increasing constantly since 1990. There are 120 new cases each year. Unfortunately, besides the increasing number, what surprises us is that we still receive patients in advanced stages”, says doctor Silva Celiku.

All women need to do is a pap test two years after starting sexual relations, and repeat it every two year so that they will not allow this virus turn into cancer.

A group of girls and women, supported by the South Eastern European Center for Disease Control have asked for more support from the health institutions, so that they can take the first concrete steps through programs that provide prevention.

The Health Minister, Ilir Beqja, promised his involvement in this initiative.

“I express my full personal support and that of the institution that I lead for building a national coalition, so that within five years we can drastically reuce the number of cervix cancer, and bring to the new generation of girls and women an equal opportunity to work healthy and without the cervix cancer”, Beqja declared.

Present in this activity was Albania’s first lady, Odeta Nishani, and Parliament Members who have signed the Wisdom Declaration, which foresees the start of an inter-institutional initiative for preventing the spread of cervix cancer in Albania. Specialists say that same as in other European Union countries, the cervix cancer vaccine should be included in the national vaccine program.
