Ilia Kareli’s death in the Greek prison is one of the cases used by
Amnesty International in the report named “State within state”.
The impunity and mistreatment culture in the Greek police has caused many human rights violations in the country.
“A prisoner was found dead in the Nigrita prison after he was transferred there. Autopsy showed that he was beaten more than once. The prosecution has given investigation orders for tortures against prison guards and police officers”, the report says.
AI underlines that racial violence against immigrants and Roma has increased in the past three years.
“The case of A.A is just the tip of the iceberg. Racism is now radicated. Use of excessive violence has the deep impunity culture prevails in the Greek police. Government have failed to recognize and face this human rights violation”, the report underlines.
The organization refers to the brutal treatment of immigrants and refugees by the police, which has arrested more than 120.000 foreign immigrants when only 7000 of them were illegal. AI brings the testimony of a Syrian immigrant, victim of police violence in the Korinth immigration center.
There have been 166 cases of racial violence during 2013, with 320 victims. 44 cases have been caused by the police or the military marine. In 75 cases, the authors are related to extremist groups which operate organized with bicycles or trained dogs. They use military or black clothes, helmets and patrol streets by attacking foreign immigrants.
There have been more than 103 cases in Athens, mainly in the downtown, even in public places. Most of the victims came from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Only 33 cases have been reported, because the police arrest all victims without a permit.
The reports underline that it is urgent to complete deep reforms for the law implementation, as regards the illegal behavior of police officers. It is also necessary to create an independent organism for supervising the reports against abusing police officers.
