AI: Roma face violence

“Europe has not been able to reduce violence against the Roma community.
In some cases there has even been an encouragement of discrimination,
intimidation and violence against them”.

On the International Day of Roma, Amnesty International published a report for their rights in Europe.

The director of Amnesty International for Europe and Central Asia, John Dalhusein, says that there has been a visible growth of cases with violence against the Roma in Europe.

“The reaction to this alarming phenomena was wrong. It is unacceptable that modern Europe has Roma communities living under the constant threat of violence and attacks”.

The report writes that although the stronger cases of violence against the Roma have been condemned, the authorities didn’t hesitate to challenge the member countries regarding the systematic discrimination of the Roma.

The report “We want justice. Failure of Europe to protect the Roma from racist violence” analyzes the violence encouraged by hate and attacks against the Roma by officials and citizens in the Czech Republic, France, Greece and the entire continent. The document underlines that the discrimination, evictions, seclusion and low education of the Roma are a norm in many European countries. AI appeals the European Union governments to engage in elliminating discrimination and violence against the Roma.
