Dozens of farmers in the Lunxheria commune are seeing for years how
their production is destroyed by floods near the Drinos valley.
The cause of the flood, according to them, is the destruction of a large dam that has been built during the 80s and that turned this into a productive land. There are at least 80 hectares of land of the Karjan village that are flooded for 5-6 months each year, damanging the entire production.
The dam was built to keep the waters of the Karjan Streak and the Drino River away from the agricultural land. It is several kilometers long and almost destroyed in all its length. The main drainage canal has been blocked for years, while the wtaer level in cultivated lands reaches even 1.5 meters, flooding and destroying every plant.
Vaso Vasi, a farmer of this area, says that he is losing most of his production of wheat and other crops because of the flood. He adds that none of the farmers is guaranteed to work his land, and no one can compensate his loses.
The works for the construction of the dam, which have historically started only on the verge of elections, have been forgotten and then they started to threaten the survival of these farmers. The Lunxheri commune in Gjirokaster has a wide range of agricultural land, divided according to law 7501. Although farmers tend to cultivate the land at almost 80%, the guarantees for the drainage, irrigation and technical assistance have been minimal.
