The Socialist Party Parliament Member, also coordinator of the governing
program of the winning coalition of the June 23rd elections, Ilir
Beqja, says that based on the current macro-economic situation that has
bad indicators, the country needs a close agreement with the
International Monetary Fund.
But this agreement cannot be the same of 2005, since Albania has left the list of countries with low incomes.
“The former agreements was based on Albania being a country with low incomes. Besides the existing advisory role, we will certainly build a closer agreement with the International Monetary Fund, because this will increase Albania’s credibility in the eyes of the financial markets and foreign investors. With an agreement with the International Monetary Fund we are aware that the rating made by the agencies will be more professional and more stable”, the Socialist Party Parliament Member declared.
According to Beqja, the help of the International Monetary Fund and the direct financial support is indispensable for the phase that our country is facing.
“The macro-economic situation is very delicate. We have information which are not complete. We are decided to make a full audit to everything that our country owns, within the public finances and beyond them, so that we can evaluate the help of an important institution such as the International Monetary Fund even with a direct financial support, which is necessary in this phase”, Beqja declared.
But Dashamir Shehi, from the right coalition, says that the limits of the International Monetary Fund are very strict and that would shrink the spaces for a liberal financial policy that Albania so much needs.
“The International Monetary Fund will look for a lower debt. Albania needs to surpass the 70-75% ceiling so that there can be investments and reforms in the Albanian economy. With the International Monetary Fund, if the agreement is not studied well, it will be very difficult”, Shehi declared.
