The serious event that happened in Lezha, where a 16-year-old student yesterday attacked with a chair his mathematics teacher, injuring her, highlighted a problem that has been going on for years in education, the loss of respect and violence against the figure of the teacher.
The Education Union of Albania condemned the act of violence against the teacher, reporting similar repeated actions in Albanian institutions.
“The result of yesterday’s event in Lezha is precisely the lack of appreciation for the figure of the teacher by the higher institutions that lead education in Albania, which is why we come to these serious events. I understand that the teacher in question used an inappropriate vocabulary, but this is not the slightest reason to use physical violence against the teacher” – said Nevrus Kaptelli, the head of the union.
“That student who did a reprehensible act became the reason for us to return to this problem, that for me exists every day in schools. Violence against the teacher in different forms, is a daily occurrence in different schools of the country”.
In order to solve this problem, which has its origin in the systematic devaluation of the teacher’s figure, teachers also ask for the support of parents who, in many cases, come to the side of their children, even without the right.
“Many groups that sell narcotic substances near or around school yards have been stopped, which means that a significant part of students use narcotic substances. Being under the effect of these substances, they can then use violence against the teacher. The whole society should be involved here, from the police, and the parents themselves, but there are many cases where parents come to the defense of their children, even when they do illegal or immoral actions”, Kaptelli added.
