The President of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopulos, held a speech at the
Congress of the International Council of Diaspora Epyriots, in which he
also appealed Albania to respect the rights of Greek minorities, as a
clear condition for EU accession.
“We must not forget the Greek minority. Their rights must be respected fully in our neighboring Albania, as it should be for citizens who live under a rule of law. Because only countries that truly have rule of law, can fulfill the minimum of requirements and now the clear condition for their integration at the biggest family of European peoples”, Pavlopulos declared.
He added that what has been seen recently in Albania, are no positive signs.
“Sadly, what we are seeing in Albania recently, are not good signs. Especially the demolition of homes, which is completely illegal. Properties are a basic right, protected by the international right of every country and of international rights as well. When we see these phenomena we say that there is a violation of basic rights, of the rule of law”, Pavlopulos declared.
He added that Greece sees with motherly love its nationals, and guarantees them that they guard with honor the international and European rights, and for this they expect a same behavior from Albania.
“If Albania wants to become EU member, demolishing Greek minority buildings will not favor their perspective”, the Greek President added.
