The Court of Tirana gave the verdict for the defendants of the Gerdeci
tragedy, sentencing with 18 years to prison the former head of MEICO,
Ylli Pinari, together with the former Director of the Plant, Dritan
Minxolli, and with 10 years for the former Albanian administrator of
Albademil, Mihal Delijorgji.
The Court sentenced to 10 years in prison the former Ministry of Defense Minister, Sokol NGjeci, and 6 years to prison and 4 years of ban from exerting duty for the former Head of the Army, Luan Hoxha. Ardian Mullai and Agim Lala were found not guilty.
The relatives of the victims reacted harshly after the verdict. Among them was Zamira Durda, who lost her son. It has been reported that Durda has blocked the Court’s door in sign of protest.
The Prosecution asked life to prison for the former MEICO director, Ylli PInari, the owner of Alba Demil, Mihal Delijorgji, and the Administrator of the Dismantling Plant in Gerdec, Dritan Minxholli. According to the Prosecution, all three defendants have caused the death of 26 people with their actions and their failure to act; and eight years for the former Chief of the Army, Luan Hoxha, and 23 years for Sokol Ngjeci.
The verdict has caused interest among the victims’ relatives and defendants, most of whom were in the courtroom.
On March 15th is commemorated the 4th anniversary of the Gerdec tragedy, where 26 persons have lost theirlives and 300 others were wounded, while many houses and businesses were heavily damaged.
