For many Albanians, even those who are not historians, Kristo Frasheri
is a very well known name, even for those who haven’t read his books.
But when you see in details what he has done in 25 years, you can understand why the “Dritan Hoxha” Foundation could not have made a better choice, at least for this year, with the award of 10.000 EUR.
Kristo Frasheri has worked on the most important issues of Albania’s history. This is in the same line with the logic of the “Dritan Hoxha” Foundation, which values each year a personality that has contributed in promoting the Albanian history, culture, art or the Albanian cause, but also personalities from Top Channel.
“We have been able to bring all Albanians together; we have united the Albanian lands, where borders do not matter anymore. We have torn down the walls and united our people in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Greece and wherever there are Albanian speaking people. A great achievement, another dream of Dritan Hoxha, turned into reality. This is one of the reasons why we decided that this year, in this important anniversary of Top Channel, to give the “Dritan Hoxha” Foundation award to a very well known scholar, someone who has contributed so much for our national cause, Professor Kristo Frasheri”, declared Mrs. Vjollca Hoxha, President of Top Media, in the gala evening held this Tuesday night.
Born in Istanbul in 1920, Kristo Frasheri has lived in Albania since 1927. He dedicated his work to history, by correcting the deformations that the foreign modern historiography has made to Albania.
Prof. Frasheri has given a special contribution to the Illyrian-Albanian civilization history, by giving arguments for the direct Illyrian descent of the Albanians. By opposing many foreign historians, prof. Kristo Frasheri explained the presence of the Albanians in the early Middle Ages, in their current lands.
“History of the Albanian Civilization” contains a synthesis of the main elements of the Albanian civilization, while his major work is “Scanderbeg, life and work”, a deeply documented history.
He has been able to separate the history of the Albanians from that of the Ottoman Empire, during the 5 centuries of Turkish occupation, and gave a special contribution to the history of the Albanian Renaissance. “History of the Prizren League”, together with the history of Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu, are the biggest contributions achieved by the Albanian history in the last decades.
“History of ancient Kosovo” is also a very valuable work, together with “Himara and the ethnic affiliation of the Himarians”, “The Identity of the Albanian Nation and other Issues”, “Polemics on the Albanian Autocephalous Orthodox Church”, “The Declaration of Independence”, etc.
Prof. Kristo Frasheri is currently working with two other monographic works, one titled “Albania at the Peace Conference of 1946” and “Epirus and the Albanian-Greek Relations through the Centuries”. The Professor Kristo Frasheri was unable to be at the evening and receive the award in person, but he made a greeting for the guests.
“It is an honor for me to give you this award, for your contribution in history and for solidifying the national identity”, declared the leader of the “Dritan Hoxha” Foundation, Vjollca Dako.
Kristo Frasheri declared:
“Thank you very much. This award was unexpected for me, but a big satisfaction. I am very happy for this award from Top Channel, because “Dritan Hoxha” is a very important foundation. Thank you very much. In the few time of life that is left for me, I will try to continue my work as a historian”.
The Dritan Hoxha Foundation was created two years ago, honoring the founder of Top Media Group. The foundation gave the first award to the European MP, Tanya Fayon, for her contribution in the visa liberalization process for Albania.
Having the European MP status, which forbids her from receiving gifts, Fayon gave the 10.000 EUR award to the orphanage in Tirana.
