Kosovo authorities have started the procedures for Albert Veliu, known as Witness X, who claims that he has talked with Agron Xhafaj, brother of the Interior Minister, Fatmir Xhafaj, to secure the passage of a quantity of marijuana to Italy.

Both Veliu and his son were arrested a few days ago by the Kosovo police authorities, under suspicions that he had entered the country illegally.

Sources from the Kosovo Interior Ministry said for the Voice of America that Veliu demanded asylum with the motivation that his life has been threatened in Albania.

Same sources explained that they will consult the Albanian authorities before any decision, while they underlined that they will respect all procedures for asylum.

Veliu, a former convict for drug traffic, has admitted that the voice in the audio recording, published by the Democratic Party, belonged to him. But his declarations were contradictory.

He says he didn’t’ know that he was being recorded, but journalist Jetmir Olldashi, author of the recording, said that he placed a microphone in Veliu’s clothes.

Agron Xhafaj, brother of the Interior Minister, has denied the accusations and accused Veliu and the DP of having manipulated the audio, which has now been sent abroad to a foreign lab.
