A tragic accident happened this morning in the Albanian capital when a 20-year-old man lost his life after suddenly losing control of his vehicle and crushing on the Durrës-Tirana highway. The event once again raises concern about the increase in accidents in the country, which are leaving behind a high number of fatalities and injured.
“The probability of road accidents has increased, you are not safe on the road. We need to be more responsible in our driving and rules should be strengthened. While the number of accidents is decreasing in Europe, it is surprisingly increasing in our country,” said safety expert Mamir Hodo.
Up to September of this year, Tirana results the district with the highest number of accidents in Albania, with 402, followed by Lezha and Durres. Road safety expert Hodo explains that most accidents are happening in residential areas and that problems are coming from both vehicle users and pedestrians.
“Usually more accidents happen in residential areas. Not applying the speed rules in cities and not adapting to the conditions when driving on pedestrian lines, when driving in a parade or wrong actions of drivers when exiting from a non-main road to a main road, these are many problems. The problems with the delivery motorbikes, electric scooters have also increased. The driver of the vehicle does not know where to be save,” added Hodo.
Citizen awareness plays a very important role in road safety so the calls to wear seat belts, not using the phone and avoiding alcohol behind the wheel, are always valid, Hodo added.
