Around 180.000 Albanian citizens with disabilities are unable to move
and complete their services in most of the public institutions.

The Minister of Social Welfare and Youth, Erjon Veliaj, gathered the inter-ministerial council, in which he asked the implementation of rules for adopting public institutions to the needs of disabled people.

“We need to stop the creation of new barriers for urban environments and for new public investments. We must start eliminating the existing barriers in public institutions by establishing easier access. This problem is not new. Regardless of the laws that have been approved and the international conventions that have been ratified, we have fallen into the syndrome of approving and not implementing”, Veliaj declared.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Niko Peleshi, declared that Albania has the laws, but they are not implemented.

“As always, there are laws in Albania, but they are not implemented. It may not be complete, but it imposes easier access to disabled people. All institutions can impose the law implementation”, Peleshi declared.

The Minister of Tourism and Urban Planning, Eglantina Gjermeni, declared that no project can be approved without fulfilling this criteria, and that they will work quickly for these people to ave easier access to these institutions.

“I guarantee that one of the criteria for projects in our Ministry will be the access for everyone, including individuals with disabilities. I am glad that this criterion will be implemented. Within one week, all Ministries will have a draft”, Gjermeni declared.

There are dozens of children that cannot frequent schools, and hundreds of persons who cannot receive public service at health centers, since they cannot enter.
