Academy of Sciences study: Half of Tirana’s population has passed Covid, nearing herd immunity

According to the latest study by the Academy of Sciences for the period June-December, under the direction of professors Genc Sulcebe and Alban Ylli, half of the population in the Albanian capital has passed the novel coronavirus.

But even though Tirana has the highest number of infected, in fact nationwide only 25% of the population was exposed to the virus.

“In the end of 2020, over 50% of the population of Tirana is immune to the coronavirus. Preference for vaccination is given to those who have not been infected because they are more fragile. Others have antibodies,” said Genc Sulcebe.

“The population in Albania has the potential for the circulation of the virus, even for other waves”, said Alban Ylli.

Tracing the spread of the virus is not always complete and as a result the numbers of infected are several times higher than those reported, academics explain.

“Not everyone is identified with the virus as the vast majority have been asymptomatic. Will we have a third wave in the spring? Probably yes, but not as strong as in winter. This virus may last until the end of next year, in various forms”, they add.
