A blind candidate for the Supreme Court

One of the candidates for the vacancy at the Supreme Court is the President of the Disabled People Association, Sinan Tafaj.

He submitted his application at the President, and wants to compete as equal with the other candidates, based on his experience as lawyer in the human rights field. Although he has never worked as a judge, he is encouraged to take this step with the mindset that a honest lawyer is a guarantee to become a honest judge.

“I will compete with my professional values, as an experienced legal expert for more than 30 years, and with more than 20 years of experience as a lawyer. I want to compete as a person who has been involved in the academic life with scientific degrees and published materials; as a lawyer who has exerted his professional right; as a private individual and as a public person, advocate of the human rights for many citizens. I trust that a honest and able lawyer has more chances to become a honest and able judge”, Tafaj declared.

The institutions have already broken the taboos. We finally have a disabled woman as Deputy Minister of Labor. But Tafaj doesn’t expect any privileges. He says that he is competing with experience in this race. On the other hand, he doesn’t want to have any prejudices for his disabilities.

“I’m not competing for any special treatment as a disabled person, or as representative of a given group. I want to be assessed as a normal person, without taking in consideration my limitations, although it is difficult for the people to perceive me outside this limitation”, Tafaj declared.

Now it is up to the support of the Albanian politics and President Nishani to decide is a blind man will be for the first time part of the Supreme Court members.
