At the meeting of the National Economic  Council, the Albanian Prime
Minister, Edi Rama, answer to some business complaints and accusations
of the opposition regarding the new fiscal package.

Speaking about the three taxes that are being raised, in cigarettes, fuels and secondary incomes, Rama said that the package follows the line declared by the government.

“We are not affecting teachers, nurses or 97% of the Albanian people who benefited from the honest taxation, after the flat tax was removed. We told businesses that we would raise taxes and we didn’t lie about that. When we said honest taxation, we said that we would raise taxes for them”, Rama declared.

The government leader wanted to remind businessmen of another fact, which, according to him, conditions the tax and budget policy.

“Businesses should not forget that this government is the first one to respect obligations to businesses. We found 720 million USD of unpaid debts. We didn’t ask why they were left to us. We took it as an obligation and we are paying them. Businesses must know that this government is doing everything possible”, the Prime Minister declared.

Rama said that the government has created a new agreement with the businesses, and this was illustrated with the VAT reimbursement.

“You should give us the benefit, because we paid the VAT as you have never seen it in your best dreams for 20 years. This is one of the evaluations that the IMF mission does. Your colleagues may testify how they took the VAT and divided it. It started with 90-10 and it went 50-50”, Rama added.
