This year Albania marks its 102nd anniversary as an independent state,
but the 800th anniversary of the first Albanian state, the Arber
Principate, gathered in Tirana academics and personalities from Albania,
Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro.
Although its beginning was 800 years ago, with institutions and laws as every other medieval country of Europe, scholars say that few things are known about our region.
“The most substantial and irreplaceable document of this period comes from archeology, the famous inscription of Gziqi, which is today preserved in the National Historic Museum in Tirana. The inscription is in Latin, a cultural element of the Roman ritual. It was discovered in 1901, 113 years ago”, declared Moikom Zeqo, a scholar.
For scholar Pellumb Xhufi, the liberal religious approach of Albanian princes in Arber were the basics of religious tolerance that exists even today as one of the most important values of the Albanian society.
“While self-declared as catholic, Karl Topia didn’t hesitate to sponsor the building of Orthodox churches and write inscriptions in the Greek-Byzantine language. This shows a huge flexibility of religious sentiments of his citizens, and which exists even today through all Albanian lands”, declared Pellumb Xhufi, a scholar.
The conference was greeted by the Chairman of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, Ramush Haradinaj.
“Albanians have done important things not only for themselves, but also for others. It is time for Albanians to start working for what is theirs, to materialize and enjoy it”, declared Ramush Haradinaj, leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo.
