22 years ago, the Lumanas village in Korca lost five residents. The Shahollari family moved to Tirana.

The father of the family says the main reason for moving was that the city was offering more opportunities to the future fo their children.

“The city life is different from rural areas. When we arrived in Tirana, we couldn’t stand the noise. But the city offered more opportunities to our children”, he said.

However, the family hasn’t forgotten their origin, especially the food.

The UN Population Division says that by 2050, 78% of the Albanian population will be living in urban areas, abandoning the rural ones.

70 persons a day move to Tirana on average, while there are a total of 30,000 Albanians who move each year from villages to bigger cities.

Albania has the highest number of the population in urban areas, followed by Montenegro.
