In 2008, the Albanian government realized the poverty measurement
procedures, and the results showed that the number of people that live
with less than 2.5 USD per day had decreased from 18.1% in 2005, to
12.5% in 2008.

Despite the decrease, this figure hides the number of individuals that live in moderated poverty. Three days ago, the World Bank published a detalied report about the economic developments in six Western Balkan Countries.

This report about Albania gives alarmong figures. According to the Bank, most of the Albanian population, or 62.1%, lives with less than 5 dollars a day.

The Bank says that besides Kosovo, this is the highest moderated poverty level in Western Balkan, even with deep differences from the other countries.

After Albania there is Macedona, where the population that lives with less than 5 USD per day is much smaller, at around 37%, while in other countries it goes from 14 to 16.1%.

The bank figures show that most of the Albanian families, or 62.1% of them, are always threatened by extreme poverty.

The latest property measurement is that of 2008, before the economy was hit by the crisis. After this year, the economic growth has been halved and experts fear that the poverty indicators in the country could have been deteriorated.
