Today is the 34th anniversary of Enver Hoxha’s death.
On April 11th, 1985, Albanians were participating in mass mourning, as Dictator Enver Hoxha died in Tirana.
While the communist press considered it the biggest loss for the Albanian people, international media reported it as the death of one of the cruelest dictators.
“His death marks the end of an entire generation of Stalinist tyrants”, The Times war writing at that time.
Although considered as one of the cruelest dictators in history, Hoxha’s regime made significant progress in education, healthcare and industry. But the popular anger and hate was much bigger in the 90s, and was expressed with the destruction of many plants and factories that would represent his power.
Hoxha’s remains were removed from the Martyr’s Cemetery in 1992, but de-jure he still has the title “Nation’s Hero”.
