November 1989 marked the end of the division between the Eastern and Western Germany, but this extraordinary event is celebrated on October 3rd.
This October marks the 29th anniversary of the Berlin Fall, a development that would change the story of the enter Eastern Europe.
Stine Klapper, Director of the Friedrich Ebert institution compares this da with the Albanian actuality.
“It is important to underline that while we celebrate this event in Germany, it celebrates the fact that solidarity and unity are better than division and isolation. It is the right time to bring in our attention the Bundestag’s decision that supports the opening of the EU accession negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia. This is another indicator of why unification is important. When the wall was brought down, Chancellor Willy Brandt said that ‘what we have together, must grow together’, and I think that this should not be something of Germany only, but also for Europe”, Klapper declared.
For Klapper, there were several factors that led to the unification of both sides of Germany.
“The political factors, a series of political personalities. But I want to underline that there were also many peaceful protests in Eastern Germany. Many people protested peacefully against the division and lived under a repressive regime that had to end. It was the protest of the people, and a country cannot function properly without the people. Their determination was one of the main factors that led to the collapse of the Berling wall”, said the Director of the Friedrich Ebert Institute.
Stine Klapper says that in 1989 she was just 9-years old.
“I was I child and I remember it very remotely. My family comes from Western Germany. I had understood that there were two sides of the country, with well-guarded borders, and it was scary for any child. I remember my parents were very happy when the wall collapsed. I couldn’t understand this and asked if somebody was hurt when it had fallen down. I was only able to understand later what it was about”, Klapper declared.
