21 years after Declaration of Independence

On July 2nd 1990, 21 years ago, Kosovo was declared republic through a
legal act, as a special unit within the former Yugoslav Federation,
equal to all other former Yugoslav republics.

The declaration expressed the aspiration of Kosovo people to freedom, and the independence would come in a moment when only one year before, Kosovo had lost its autonomy by the government of Yugoslavia.

Right afterwards, Serbia decided to establish a state of emergency in Kosovo, marking a turning point for Kosovo Albanians. Feride Hyseni, Parliament Member of that time, reminds the historical event of 21 years ago.

“It is an incomparable time. It made us having today the building of Kosovo Government. In that time, when we were delegates, they closed our room of delegates. We made a sublime century-long act of our population, in front of that building, because they closed our room”, says former MP Feride Hyseni.

This Saturday, she and other colleagues that announced the Declaration of Independence, were welcomed in the office of Hajredin Kuçi, who valued the fact that on that time happened the institutional detachment from Serbia.

“I know that someone might call July 2nd as the institutional connection with Serbia. But I say that July 2nd is an institutional detachment from Serbia. In this direction, your act, supported by all institutions that came afterwards, has been a righteous institutional detachment, in a concrete sense, from the Republic of Serbia”, said Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister.

Two months after this event, on September 7th 1990, the same delegates announced the first highest legal act, the Constitution.
