2012 increased poverty in Albania

The strong economic slowdown in 2012 has turned Albania six years back in the fight against poverty.

Recent data from the World Bank show that only this year, the part of the population that lives with less than 5 dollars each day increased with 4.5%. This has brought the number of Albanians who live with less than 5 dollars a day from 43% in 2011, to 47.5% in 2012.

This has changed within one year the improvement that had been reached in six years against poverty. The last time that Albania had similar indicators was 2006.

But the biggest concern coming from experts is that the number might have deteriorated even more in 2013, when the economy almost fell in stagnation with the increased production, which reached the historic minimum of 0.44%.

The danger is that this slowdown might have deteriorated the life of thousands of other families, bringing them to the bring of misery. This is another reason why Albania is the most threatened country by poverty in Balkan. The data show that Albania has almost half of the population living in survival conditions, with less than 5 dollars a day. Other countries have this indicator to the levels of 4.5 to 35%. This makes even a small economic slowdown show strong social effects, while other countries seem protected.
