19 tons of household waste were seized in the Italian port of Ancona by the Guardia di Finanza, who dismantled a network of illegal waste traffic from Germany. According to Italian media, the truck loaded with this waste was leaving for Albania.
There were almost 19 tons of electrical waste on board the truck, including household appliances like ovens or washing machines, imported from Germany, as the custom checks revealed lack of documentation for their transportation.
The driver of the truck, a 25-year-old Albanian and his 44-year-old Albanian companion, were prosecuted by the customs authorities. Both risk a fine of 1,550 euros to 26,000 euros, in addition to arrest for up to 2 years.
This is not the first time Italian customs stop illegal waste material from reaching Albania. On February of this year, over 25 tons of illegal waste, ready to be sent to Albania, were blocked and seized at the port of Ancona by the staff of the Customs Agency and Carabinieri del Noe, Italian media report.
