The Institution of Statistics reported that the Albanian economy grew
with 1,65% in the first trimester of this year. The General Director,
Gjergj Filipi, declared that the positive growth is dedicated to the
grown production in some sectors.
“The biggest influence comes from industry, post-communication, commerce, hotels, restaurants and other services”, Gjergj Filipi declared.
“Although positive, the increased production in the first trimester remains slow. According to INSTAT, it has been influenced by the weak progress in construction and transportation, the lattest hit most by the bankruptcy of a local air company during the past year.
“The construction activity has dropped with 5.3%, compared to the first trimester of 2013. The transportation activities in the first trimester also marked a drop of 24,98%. This pace will continue for the two upcoming trimesters, because we saw the ending of an activity that might be fulled by competitors who are not locals”, Filipi declared.
According to the recommendations of the European Union, INSTAT has changed the methodology through which they calculate the economic growth. Filipi says that the new method influences the final result, but, according to him, INSTAT has recalculated the figures of the past periods to make them more comparative.
“The new method of classifications for economic activities has entered in effect. This is its second version. All European countries work with this pace, same as Albania. The figures can be compared with the past. All series that you will take are comparable with all former developments”, Filipi declared.
INSTAT has corrected the annual figure of the economic growth for 2013, which went from 0,44% to 1,42%. According to INSTAT, this took place due to some reasons that are related to the change of the reference year on which the measurement is made, from 2005 to 2010, and a more complete information that has been taken during these months.
