The tragic accident yesterday in Shala where the 31-year-old German tourist lost her life was not an isolated case for the tourist season this year in Albania.

During this dense tourist season, 16 tourists tragically lost their lives in our country, who were involved in accidents, falls or medical episodes in the attractions they had chosen to visit.

Due to road accidents, 4 tourists lost their lives, while others remained victims while playing sports in rivers or walking at altitude. Similar to the case of the German tourist in Shala, was the episode on May 9, when two woung women, one Belgian and one French, crossing on foot from Thethi to Valbona in the northern heights of Albania, without a guide, fell into the abyss and lost their lives.

The river excursions have also taken on the life of foreing tourists. A Dutch tourist drowned in the canyons of Osum on May 11, while a 66-year-old German woman drowned in the canyons of Langarica in the south of the country on March 31, while her husband was able to save himself. In most cases, the tourists were not accompanied by professional guides.

“The guide is indispensable because they know the risks and the appropriate time to make certain trips. Even in case of incidents, they know how to get help for the tourists”, says professional guide Emanuel Pjetri.

Tourists who neglect the rules according to agencies are mostly Europeans led by Czechs, who often do not take professional guides but often typically choose to be accompanied by ‘a friend of theirs’ who has visited Albania before.
