The Serbian President, Tomislav Nikolic, declared that the international
community owes Serbia an apology for the NATO bombardments 15 years
ago.
While all the Serbian media focused their news on this topic today, there have been several commemoration ceremonies throughout the country. Some in Serbia say that their country was bombed by NATO for stealing Kosovo.
Dushan Janjic, experienced analyst and activist, says that the bombings however changed the future of Balkan and brought to light the path towards the European Union and the Euro-Atlantic integration.
“The goal of the bombing for Kosovo was stopping the machinery of Slobodan Milosevic and his army from becoming a regional threat. The collateral result was the cooperation with the Kosovo Albanians and the creation of the state of Kosovo”, Janic declared.
He reminds that the civil society was active in Serbia during the war time. Kosovo and Serbia have reached success in their relations after the talks with Brussels, but this is not enough.
“We need to live together because we are neighbors, or at least because we are close to each other. After normalizing the relations with Kosovo, there should be a real cooperation of Serbs and Albanians in the entire region”, Janic declared.
Part of the opinion in Serbia were against the dictator Slobodan Milosevic, but the propaganda was huge by then. The remaining Yugoslavia had been tested not only with the Kosovo war, but trust was also lost by the massacres and refusals for peaceful agreements.
