Kosovo commemorated today the 14th anniversary of the KFOR intervention
in Kosovo. June 12th 1999, the day which marked the end of the bloody
war, at least officially, is not recognized as the Liberation Day.
The Kosovo Prime Minister respects the official celebrations law, which states that June 12th is the day of peace. President Atifete Jahjaga and Parliament Speaker Jakup Krasniqi referred to June 12th as the day of freedom.
“The Day of Freedom marks the end of a difficult era in our history, and the start of a new, bright chapter of our life and our development as a state and society”, Jahjaga’s declaration says.
Prime Minister Thaci thanked NATO for the bombardment campaign that liberated Kosovo, and mentioned the significance of the agreement for normalizing the relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
The Prime Minister underlines that Kosovo is playing an important role in the creation of peace and stability in the region, while the agreement with Serbia marks the historic step for making Kosovo European.
For Parliament Speaker Krasniqi, the Day of Freedom is one of the most important days in Kosovo, adding that Kosovo is now a peace and stability factor in the region.
Krasniqi valued the fact that Kosovo enjoys unlimited support by the United States of America and the European Union.
The NATO 78 days long bombardment campaign against the Serbian police and military targets ended with the withdrawal of the Serbian forces from Kosovo, and the entrance of KFOR troops on 12 June 1999.
