August 13th of this year marks the 12th anniversary of the Ochrid
agreement, through which the armed conflict of 2001 ended in Macedonia.
The agreement was signed by the then President of Macedonia, Boris Trajkovski, the former leader of the VMRO-DPMNE, and Prime Minister of that time, Lubco Georgievski, former leader of the PPD, Imer Imeri, former leader of the PDSH, Arber Xhaferri, and the former leader of the LSDM, Branko Cervenovski.
The Ochrid agreement saved Macedonia from a interethnic conflict, but not from the race between the Macedonian and the Albanian parties, with the former wanting to postpone its implementation, and the latter to respect the deadlines.
This battle goes on even today, and many things that should have been completed since 2004 are still incomplete.
Some Albanian analysts say that this agreement has been exhausted, as shown by the mono-ethnic projects of the incumbent Prime Minister, Nikolla Gruevski, such as Skopje 2014 and the beating of the Albanian citizens by Macedonian hooligans in the recent years.
However, it is also true that the Albanian party that is now on power profits more from this agreement, so that they can employ their militants, and also the ethnic Macedonians who saved the state that they call their only home.
They were able to preserve the position of the only owner in Macedonia after signing this agreement, the goal of which was to have all of them be owners of this country.
Today, 12 years after the agreement, Macedonia has the same ethnic communities living together same as before 2001, with the same problems and disagreements.
