A great ceremony was held in Vlore for the 100th anniversary of
independence. The raising of the Albanian flag as a symbol act in this
special day gathered in Vlore the heads of the Albanian politics, among
hundreds and thousands of citizens, not only from Vlore and the
surrounding areas, but from all Albanian lands.
The Independence Day turned into a pilgrimage day for all Albanians who feel patriotic and who want to honour our country. Same as 100 years ago, in Vlore arrived the “delegates” from all other Albanian districts, even Kosovo. Some of them started their journey on horses.
The Albanian President and the Mayor of Vlore cut the giant cake that was prepared specially for this occasion. A rare occurrence was the opposition leader and the Prime Minister standing close to each other, accompanied by the Prime Minister of Kosovo. The President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, was also present in this ceremony.
The Mayor of Vlore, Shpetim Gjika, declared that on this special day we all must walk forward, in this fraternal union of all colours, with our united hearts. “Vlore has all the reasons to feel proud as the city that kept alive the feeling of freedom. All Albanians have a reason to feel proud today, for the fact that Ismail Qemali was a wise and calm politician. May his figure be honoured until the end of times”, Gjika declared.
The Albanian President, Bujar Nishani, greeted all fellow Albanians in this special day: “They tried to tear our flag apart, and we didn’t allow them. They tried to disintegrate it, but we brought it back again. They tried to change it, but it wasn’t possible. Here we have today this proud flag. The history of our country shows the blood that was given for our independence and freedom”, Nishani declared. The head of the Albanian state declared that on this 100th anniversary we are gathering the fruits of the work done by the men and women who fought for our independence, and their figure will remain always bright”, Nishani declared.
