Three days after a prisoner lost his life in Shënkoll prision near Lezha, 10 prison police officers were discharged on Chief Director of Prisons Mikolvan Kopani’s orders. Fatmir Sulaj died after fire broke on his cell, on still unknown circumstances.
The case is under investigation but Kopani reacted swiftly after a meeting with Justice Minister Ylli Manjani. Chief of the prison’s Social Affairs was also exonerated and another 20 officers got also a warning. Minister Manjani also requested a review of prison cell procedures, after it was understood that all inmates use gas canisters, like the one that exploded and caused the death of Fatmir Sulaj.
Inmates who witnessed the incident are being interviewed by the local prosecutor’s office in order to understand if the fire broke by accident or the prisoner committed suicide.
