10 days in prison for drunk drivers

The traffic police has arrested 660 citizens in the past 5 months for
driving under the influence of alcohol or for driving without a license.

Police says that 152 of them have been arrested for alcohol, and the rest for not having a license or for failing to stop to the call of a police officer, mainly because they were aware about the start of the operation.

But the prosecution and courts have given the arrest measure for only 83 of them. Based on statistics, the justice institutions have kept in prison only 17 out of 400 that have been stopped by the police in the past four months.

But everything changes in January. From 207 cases, 51 were kept under arrest. Police is still unsatisfied, especially for the fact that the justice system has released problematic people for the traffic. The fact that the number of drivers caught under the influence of alcohol is twice bigger than the number of those who were arrested, has created concerns for the police and the Interior Ministry.

The Ministry’s legal experts are working with a draft that would change the Traffic and Penal Code, in order to give 10 days of prison for everyone that is caught driving while drunk.

According to experts, this will not allow judges and prosecutors to release those who are problematic.

With the 10-day arrest, as the shortest measure for drunk drivers, the Interior Ministry aims to reduce the number of accidents.
