The Kosovo Prosecution has ordered the arrest of 10 Prishtina Municipality workers.
10 communal officials, including the Chief Inspector, Ismet Haliti, are accused of power abuse in 49 construction works.
Another man was also arrested, the owner of a construction company. The group was aware of several illegal constructions, but never tried stopping them.
The Prosecution says that the investigations had started one year ago. There are founded suspicions for their arrests. The current leaders of the Municipality had also supplied facts to the Prosecution.
“We have worked with the Prosecution and we have given materials. This is related to the construction sector and illegal constructions”, declared Shpend Ahmeti, Head of the Commune.
Ahmeti explained that the construction companies owe 44 million EUR to the Prishtina Commune, and that even communes who had debts were allowed to have construction permits.
Ahmeti underlined that they are waiting for a final verdict regarding this issue, but now they have to take measures, because the Municipality doesn’t have any construction inspector.
“All inspectors were taken under custody. I am waiting for confirmation from the Prosecution, and then we will continue with respecting the law. We will suspend permits to people involved in criminal acts”, Ahmeti declared.
There is reasonable doubt that the 10 officials have been part of an organized crime.
The 11th suspect, the owner of a private company, he is accused of forging official documents.
