A considerable amount of drugs was destroyed by fire after a Prosecution
order, a few meters from Tirana, close to the Erzen River. 1.5 tons if
drugs were seized with the presence of all ambassadors accredited in
Tirana, and other high-rank representatives of the police and the
Ministry of Interior.
The destruction started after a standard procedure for the verification of the seized drugs. The Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri, declared that the presence of ambassadors shows the support of the international partners.
“We are studying a strategy against the drug traffic. We have planned it with the international partners and we are implementing it now. We are determined to fight the drug traffic. There is an inspection throughout the territory, but fight against drug is not easy. The financial and criminal pressure is huge, but we are doing our best”, Tahiri declared.
On behalf of the biggest representation of the diplomatic body, the European Union representative in Albania declared that the results in the fights against drugs will be an important factor for the status in June. He said that no one should politicize what happened in Divjaka.
“The fight against the drug traffic and organized crime remains a challenge for Albania. The consolidation of the structures for completing this challenge will be an important factor for the EU path. This will be taken in consideration by the EU member countries in June, when we will gather for the status. The EU is committed to support the Albanian authorities in the fight against crime. The Divjaka situation should not be politicized. It is up to the police”, he declared.
According to the police, from January 2013 to March 2014, more than 30 tons of drugs have been seized. From January 2013 to September 2013, 13 tons of Marijuana have been seized. From January to March 2014, the police has seized more than 15 tons. The police say that in April 2013, the seized drug was 1.1 tons. In April 2014 it is more than 5 tons.
