The Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Kotzias, declared that they had made a mistake supporting Albania without conditions.
“As you know, Albania is a candidate country for the EU. Unfortunately, former Greek governments have allowed this without conditions”, Kotzias declared.
The Greek Minister said that this matter should be resolved now that they need support for opening negotiations. One condition set by Greece, is defending the property rights for minorities.
“These countries need to fulfill several requirements before opening the accession negotiations. Albania had the judiciary reform as condition, and we added four others”, Kotzias declared.
According to him, Albania should not continue with the reform of Enver Hoxha, who recognized as minoritary only people living in two areas. If they moved to Tirana or any other town, they would lose that status. According to him, now this has received attention from the EU and USA as well.
“Greece is working for them to receive property titles, so that their rights are sanctioned by law. We are not concerned about the fact that minorities are being expropriated, but because there are no talks about expropriation”, the Greek Foreign Minister said.
Kotzias confirmed the drastic measure for removing the citizenship of the Himara citizens: “Politicians who don’t respect the rights of the Greek minority will not have Greek citizenship. I don’t know what former governments have done, giving citizenship to strange types, including the Mayor of Himara. We stripped him of the Greek citizenship because you cannot be a Greek citizen and violate Greek minority rights”, the Foreign Minister added.
This reaction comes a few days after Kotzias met in New York with the Albanian Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, who said that there is a Greek desire to resolve the problems and start talks in an expert level, and the reports will then be presented to the respective Prime Ministers.
