The Chairman of the OSCE presence in Albania, Ambassador Berndt
Borchard, said today at the Forum for Women Rights and Domestic
Violence, held at the International Film Festival of Human Rights, that
the Albanian society must end social and economic problems that push
some women towards crime, listing among them violence, moral taboos,
social pressure, poverty and family crises.

“Women are often victims and culprits at the same time. We need to help women finding themselves in abusive situations so that they seek protection. They need to be empowered socially and economically. As for women removed of their freedom, we must focus on their rehabilitation and integration”, said Ambassador Borchardt.

He spoke in front of an audition made of mostly women who are serving prison sentences. He added that the OSCE is committed to protect people in prison, encouraging alternative conviction measures, especially for women.

“We at the OSCE believe that removing freedom should be the last option. We have worked for years to protect people in prison, encouraging alternative measures especially for women”, he added.”
