Tirana Mayor, Erion Veliaj, accepted the propositions of the Socialist
Movement for Integration before increasing water price in Tirana.

“We have the votes to make Tirana have tap water 24/7”, Veliaj said and underlined that the Municipality will present the Water Regulation Entity a business plan that includes the propositions of the Socialist Movement for Integration.”Water for citizens is more important than political parties”, Veliaj added.

The SMI had declared that they would vote the project only if the Municipality takes measures to reduce informality by cutting illegal water connections and stop preferential water supply that is given to several businesses.

SMI also said that people covered by social welfare and families of retired persons who have no other revenues should be left out of the price increase, otherwise the SMI will not vote the project.

The SMI also said that the price increase should be differentiated for businesses, based on their activity. Factories and plants related to food products and other important articles of industry should not have the same price as cafes or service offices with less than five employees.

The Democratic Party, on the other hand, considered this a mafia act and invited councilors to not vote it.
