In a meeting with Magistrature Students, the Albanian Prime Minister,
Edi Rama, said that the justice reform is urgent and it should be
approved despite the absurd situation we are in.

He answered to the opposition, by saying that their leader has a proposition on his table and only needs to vote it.

“We have no formula to remove their fear from justice. We are ready to find a solution and we don’t have their tension for this. We only wait for approval from the EU and the USA, since so far we have only had reforms that have been such only by name, but were never implemented. I understand his declaration. I received a phone call from the Netherlands today and I was told that I have a proposition from the Democratic Party, but does it have the support of the EU and US?”, Rama declared.

As for the “Vetting process”, Rama said this has been discussed from the beginning as a concept accepted by the government and the opposition, which insisted for the inclusion of the international partners.

“Albania is not the first nor the last country facing justice corruption. History has shown many countries have had even worse system. But their practice has shown there are methods to improve it. There is a vetting system that doesn’t allow corrupted people to come to power and this has worked in many countries. We are facing an absurd situation. I have made a serious proposition to the opposition. There is a reason why they are scared now. But this reform is much more than what you think. It doesn’t decide the fate of an individual, of a party or of a government, but of all Albania”, Rama said.

Rama said one part wants to divide crime and corruption from judges and prosecutions. Others want the crime and corruption to stay inside the justice system. Rama underlined that we can come out of this situation by bringing down a rotten justice system.
