The two laws of the controversial “anti-defamation” law package will be reviewed by the Venice Commission this March.

The Venice Commission has published this announcement on their official bulletin.

The “anti-defamation” package, proposed by the government and Prime Minister Edi Rama, has caused strong reactions in Albania.

The opposition’s disproval of this law was joined by journalists, the civilian society and analysts, who see it as a violation of free speech and as government control on media.

President Ilir Meta returned the law for further discussion in Parliament, arguing that it was in violation with the Constitution.

However, the President’s decree was overturned by the Productive Activity Committee, clearing the way for further votes in Parliament.
