The US Ambassador to Tirana, Donald Lu, declared in an activity organized by the Ombudsman that the government and opposition must work together to find a Provisory Prosecutor to replace Llalla.
“I keep fighting for the judiciary reform, because it is a priority for the US President and State Secretary. The Judiciary Reform is entering a decisive phase. The Vetting Commissions and international observers have worked hard. They will finalize the first Vetting cases very soon, which will bring the creation of other judiciary institutions, including the Special Prosecution and Judiciary Councils, and the National Bureau of Investigations. Albanians are impatient to find justice and politicians are afraid of it. Some politicians said that the judiciary reform is dead. It is not dead, but the ability of important politicians to control and manipulate it is almost dying. The old justice system protected wealthy statesmen through corruption and political influence. The new system doesn’t allow General Prosecutors who don’t prosecute anyone. This country cannot enter the Eu if it continues with such a low rate of convictions for serious crimes. We have appealed the government and opposition to work together and find a replacement of the Prosecutor General whose mandate is expired.
