The Socialist Party appealed the Prosecution to start the investigation
on the Durres-Kukes road, after the new facts that came to light by the
cables that the US Embassy in Tirana addressed to the US State
Department.

“I expect to see new steps from the General Prosecution. After these facts, the Prosecution can reinvestigate the case”, declared the Socialist MP Ilir Beqja.

The MP says that the cables prove what the opposition had reported a log time ago, how the government had deliberately misused the public funds for electoral interests.

“The company has warned that peoples’ life would be in danger, but the never didn’t back up, because it had its own interests”, Beqja declared.

According to them, the opposition will review all juridical options for demanding the transparency of the affairs with public funds.

“We will follow the actions of other institutions too”, Beqja added.

One of the documents that the US Embassy in Tirana to the US State Department on 2009 shows that the director of Betchel Company himself, Michael Adams had personally tried to convince Prime Minister Berisha not to open the Kalimashi tunnel two days before the elections, because it was dangerous and it would bring an additional cost of 15 million EUR. But these warnings were not taken in consideration.

The US Embassy cables say that Sali Berisha inaugurated the tunnel on June 27th, two days before the elections, and a few days after the tunnel had problems that cost the state budget dozens of millions of Euros.
