Shkoder embankment repairs, still undergoing

Although there is an investment for nine anti-flood projects, with a
value of 10 million USD, specialists from the Drainage Board in Shkoder
declared that in areas such as Obot, Trush and Baks Rrjoll, floods will
be unavoidable and the residents must prepare for a situation similar to
last year’s.

The Director of the Drainage Board, Rudolf Rasha declared that they are doing a great job for building and repairing a series of embankments, some of which have finished and others, like that of Dajc, are expected to finish soon.

As regards the Buna River, the director Rasha declared that its riverbed will not be deepened, because it might receive sea water. The World Bank has initiated a great project regarding the study of all waters that surround Shkoder and Subshkoder.

The Director of the Drainage Board appealed all communes to give funds for maintaining the embankments and the drainage channels in their areas, because the Directory of the Drainage Board cannot afford the maintenance of 60 km of embankments.

In the last catastrophe, 14.000 hectares of land were flooded with water, damaging 4600 houses and killing 31.000 farm animals. The total damage in Shkoder and Sub-Shkoder, considered as the biggest natural catastrophe in Albania in the last 15 days, had a cost of 130 million USD.

Despite the many promises, the damaged residents have not received indemnities yet, while another rainy season in approaching.
