Running water back in cities

After two days, water finally ran again through the taps of Durres, Fier and Vlore.

Official sources say that in the first hours of this Saturday, the aqueducts started supplying the city with tap water.

Unofficial sources confirm that this was achieved through the intervention of the Minister of Transports, Sokol Olldashi.

CEZ undertook these extreme measures for the three cities by refusing to supply the aqueducts with energy, because these enterprises had not paid the energy bills for several months.

The aqueduct of the Fier city has accumulated a debt of 15 million ALL per month, since October 2010.

Aqueduct directors say that these enterprises do not have profits and it is impossible for them to pay such expensive energy bills. For this reason, they have demanded subventions from the Albanian state.

In Vlore, where the launch of the tourist season was just inaugurated, the water supply has resumed again, but not for the entire city.

The director of the Vlore aqueduct, Barbara Gjika, declared that after the pressure made to CEZ, they have accepted to provide energy for five pumps, enabling 60% of the city to have running water.

The water pumps that supply the remaining part of the city have been damaged due to the interruption of the work process, and technicians are working to repair them.

Durres has also been supplied with water since the first hours of the day.
