“Rama turns FRESSH into NGO”

“Where are the faces of FRESSH, the Euro-Socialist Forum?”, is the title
of the January 8th 2008 cable, composed by the US Embassy on the 16th
anniversary of this forum.

Beside the fact that Edi Rama’s speech was welcomed in this activity, he clashed with FRESSH by dismissing the leader and replacing him with an unknown person. As leader of the Party, Mr. Rama changed the structure of the forum in which he never adhered, since after the fall of communism he lived for many years outside Albania”, the cable says.

The US Embassy, referring to Socialist Party sources, writes that more people within the SP are accusing Rama of having transformed FRESSH into an un-important NGO, losing the opportunity of producing future leaders.

Nano, from politics to business

Fatos Nano, an old Albanian political actor has not remained outside the interest of the US embassy in the daily reports addressed to the State Department.

His occasional returns in the Albanian political scene are the subject of the February 8th 2008 cable which says that the role of the former Prime Minister remains controversial after leaving the Prime Ministry and the Socialist Party after 2005 elections.

Referring to what is told about Mr. Nano, the US embassy reports that people who know him very well have confirmed that his attention has shifted from politics to business and personal interests, although many others say that his political ambitions remain undaunted, waiting the right opportunity for returning on the national scene.

Nano’s flirt with the Socialist Movement for Integration leader, Ilir Meta, is described by the cable as a buzz full of speculations, and that the real return has only just started.

Naturally, few people believe that he has left the political scene for good. The former ambassador Withers comments Nano’s handshake with Berisha not as the return of a triumphing head of state, as Nano would have liked it.

“Even though the meeting might have served to the realization of a short-termed goal, seeing Berisha asking advises and support from the man noted as the most corrupted politician in Albania, and at the same time the harshest former rival, it just sounds like pure opportunism by both parties.”

By analyzing the facts of his past and based on his future plans, for Withers, this has to do with Nano’s failure to become President.

“Nano’s failure to take the Presidency is maybe a sign that Albania has overcome the post-Nano period”, Withers writes, adding that only a few people in Albania would disqualify Nano as a political force, or underestimate his abilities for a strong political game by preparing the terrain for a future return.
