The Albanian President, Bamir Topi, invited the Albanian citizens to
participate in the local elections and give their verdict for the local
government.

“I invite you to participate in these elections, to strengthen a functional democracy. With your free choice we will shorten the road towards the European Union. This is our challenge, our common interest”, says the message of the President for May 8th local elections.

The Head of the State underlined that citizens should vote in secrecy and free from any kind of external influence.

“May 8th deserves to be a day of democratic normality, a day when the citizens enjoy the freedom and use it to give their verdict for local administration. May 8th deserves to be a day of reflection and correction of all past electoral mistakes, a day that closes a chapter of transition and that shows that Albanian society has accepted the high democratic values of the European family”, the message says.

Expressing his concern on the harsh rhetoric, the lacking of political programs and for the incidents, Topi noted that only the voters have the moral and legal strength to turn May 8th into a success for the democracy.

“Albania deserves an effective local governing, an electoral process of democratic standards, a functional democracy and long-term policies of development and integration. This is the opportunity to show this political will. This is the big challenge for the political parties and their political leaders”, the message says.

The President asked the law and order institutions, the Prosecution, the Court and the Electoral College to be active and totally professional for fulfilling their legal mission.
