Parliament’s new session starts among tensions. Opposition demands Constitutional amends

Speaker Gramoz Ruci opened the new Parliamentary session and presented the new agenda, the most important of which is the establishing of new judiciary institutions and adopting the legislation based on Constitutional Court verdicts.

“Not only we want to pass the law for 2/3rd of the Parliament members, but it would be a direct contribution for opening the EU accession negotiations”, Ruci declared.

The opposition continued the discussions of December 18th, once again considering the appointing of the Prosecutor General a constitutional crime. For the majority, the behaviour of the opposition in that session was a hit against Albania’s efforts for European integration.

“The Prime Minister needs a Prosecutor General to control and close criminal cases of his closest collaborators. He wants to dictate the creation of the High Council of the Prosecution through an illegal Prosecutor General. His only purpose is to avoid the establishment of an independent Special Prosecution Against Corruption, the most important instrument for bringing big fish to justice, and also the main condition for opening Albania’s EU accession negotiations”, Basha declared.

“Albania is closer than ever to open the accession negotiations, which would be an epical moment in the history of our country. This is why Albania doesn’t deserve the mud-throwing, the dust-raising and desperation of this opposition, which has lived for the past two years with a fear form the judiciary reform”, declared Taulant Balla.

In this session, the opposition demanded the Parliament to include in its agenda their constitutional and legal amendments for finding another provisory Prosecutor General and remove Arta Marku from her duty.

However, this session as well didn’t go without tension. After the situation was normalized, Speaker Ruci said that their proposition was included automatically in the agenda because that is what the regulation says. Hence, tensions were not necessary, for Ruci.

Preserving their conditioned relations with the Parliament, the opposition abandoned the voting process as the majority passed the agenda.
