The General Secretary of NATO, Andres Fog Rasmusen asked the member countries of the Alliance to spend more fore their defense.

He ranks Albania at the same level with France, Britain and Greece for the accuracy of fulfilling the criteria that requires 2% of the GDP to be spent for the defense.

In an interview for BBC program “News Night”, Anders Fog Rasmusen says that Albania is a model country in the Alliance for fulfilling its obligations.

“Libia showed serious problems. After only 11 weeks of attacks against a regime that was not very well armed, the allies started lacking of ammunition and other supplies, which came from the United States”.

Anders Fog Rasmusen said that NATO today is more indispensable than ever, sharing the same concern with the US Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, about the decrease of EU budget on defense.

“If Europe wants to have a significant role in the world arena, and to participate in international missions, it will need weapons, and for this it must invest in defense.”

One week before, during his visit in Brussels, Gates warned NATO countries for a considerable weakening of the Alliance, due to the lacking of commitment.

“Equal share of costs might oblige USA leave NATO”, Gates declared.
