Successors of Albanian fighters who stood by the side of Skanderbeg five centuries ago attended a mass today, held for commemorating his death at the Saint Nicola cathedral.

The ceremony continued at Skanderbeg’s memorial, where father Angelo Massafra commented the message of Pope Francis, who says that Albanians should unite same as centuries ago when they formed a state.

After five centuries, the Arberesh of Italy still preserves the Albanian language. “We are very happy to be here. We all speak the same language and we have the same culture”, one of them says.

Present in the ceremony were representatives of the Albanian Muslim community. Mufti Agim Tereziu said that Muslims see Skanderbeg as a unifying hero of Albania.

“If we discuss for how many years Skanderbeg was Muslim, for how many Orthodox and for how many Catholic, then we will be divided. Great people like him should be followed for the great religious tolerance that they have passed to us”, Mufti Tereziu declared.
