The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, met today in Germany with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

In a joint press release, Merkel said that Albania has made progress and Germany will decide in the days to come about their vote on the accession negotiations.

“There are several conditions before starting the accession negotiations. Albania has workd hard on some matters. We will create our final opinion in the days to come and we will discuss with our European colleagues”, Merkel said.

She underlined that the meeting with Rama was very important, helping Germany to understand how Albania sees the implementation of the conditions and how they can keep supporting it with reforms.

“Albania has started many important reforms. One of them is the vetting of judges and prosecutors. This reinforces the rule of law and its entire credibility. We know that the vetting should continue with the police. I can only encourage the Prime Minister to keep up”, Merkel said.

Rama thanked Merkel for supporting the Balkan region, especially Albania. He said that our country deserves opening the accession negotiations, after the reforms. Rama adds that the religion of Albanians is Europe.

“After the EC recommendation, I hope to have Germany’s support in June. It is clear for us that this is not the finalization of this process. This is the finalization of a phase and the start of another phase. There are many reforms, challenges and other sacrifices waiting ahead. We deserve to become members of the European Union. I have come here to show my conviction that Albania must not lose time waiting for the accession negotiations, because Albania deserves it. Many say that Albania is Muslim. Albania is a country where Christians and Muslims live together in harmony. From southern to northern Albania, their only religion is Europe”, Rama declared.
