Heritage memorandum

Culture heritage representatives from architecture, media and civic society, just a few days before the electoral campaign launch, have signed a memorandum that demands municipal candidates to put in the centre of attention the propositions and the concrete measures regarding cultural heritage.

“If any candidate would call us and ask our opinion, we would give it with pleasure. We should try and impose this necessity to them”, said Artan Lame, chairman of the Cultural Heritage Protection Association.

“They are invading the fertile lands. All over the world, fertile lands are cleaned and protected. We throw rocks to this lands to build constructions”, said architect Maks Velo.

The representatives demanded that the municipalities must have concrete programs for the citizens, who need more public spaces, more parks and cultural centers.

“Our state administration becomes partners with the destructors for profits. The members of this state have removed hectares of forests from protected areas, like the recent Karaburun event, and have given these lands to private companies”, confirms environment protector Xhemal Mato.

The civil society representatives have expressed their readiness to denounce any candidate that will not implement his promised electoral program; regardless to the party he belongs.

“We must find the courage to go at any village, anywhere that a monument is being destroyed, and openly support anyone that has in the electoral program the reconstruction of heritage objects”, said journalist Mentor Kikia.

Until now, at least 50 cultural monuments have been destroyed and removed from Albania’s historical and cultural memory, by a destructing initiation that doesn’t seem to stop even today.

“The Pyramid” is one of the objects recently removed from the cultural heritage list and the government has ordered its demolishment.
